Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery and aesthetic medicine?

Cosmetic surgery aims to improve physical appearance while taking the patient’s anatomy, health and expectations into account. It is not medically necessary. Examples include cosmetic rhinoplasty, breast augmentation or reduction, liposuction and facelift surgery.

Reconstructive surgery aims to correct an abnormality, a congenital condition, or the effects of an accident, illness or previous surgery. It is medically indicated, although appearance also matters. Examples include breast reconstruction after cancer and the correction of a congenital condition. It may be partially or fully covered by the French national health insurance system (Assurance Maladie).

Aesthetic medicine includes minimally invasive, non-surgical treatments that do not require a hospital stay. These treatments help prevent or improve signs of ageing and certain aesthetic concerns, using techniques such as botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid injections, chemical peels and lasers. Results are temporary and require regular maintenance.

Anaesthesia for cosmetic surgery

Depending on the procedure and individual circumstances, anaesthesia may be local, local with intravenous sedation, or general.

Age is one of the factors considered when deciding whether local anaesthesia is preferable to general anaesthesia. The appropriate option will be discussed with you and your surgeon during a consultation.

Are any procedures covered by French health insurance?

The French national health insurance system does not cover purely cosmetic surgery, but it reimburses reconstructive procedures (congenital conditions, the effects of cancer, injuries). Supplementary health insurance may cover additional medical and hospital costs, including fees above the standard reimbursement rate.

In summary:

• Cosmetic surgery or aesthetic medicine (liposuction, facelift, botulinum toxin injections, etc.):
not reimbursed by the French national health insurance system (Assurance Maladie).

• Procedures with a reconstructive purpose (abdominoplasty, prominent ear correction, breast malformations, surgery after cancer, etc.):
may be covered by Assurance Maladie and supplementary health insurance, subject to eligibility.
